Mejecres Catch-Up School in Rwanda
We are excited to tell you about a great project that owners Gordy and Cathy Wollen have started, along with the Ellensburg Rotary Club. The Mejecres Catch-Up School is helping orphans in Rwanda who have fallen behind due to AIDS and the genocide reenter the school system and be trained for work.
The head of the Mejecres Catch-Up School is Alexis Ruhumurize. Alexis is a 23-year-old orphan who has a vision of helping other orphans like him have a chance to get ahead. He started the Mejecres catch up school in January of 2007.
The Ellensburg Rotary Club is working on a plan to help create a means to providing long-term funding for this catch-up school. The plan involves micro loans that will help provide operating funds for the school, and get students who graduate from the vocational school started in business. The ultimate goal is to help the school become self-sufficient, which should happen in 1-2 years.
The Ellensburg Rotary Club donated $1,000 to the catch-up school. About $9,000 is needed for the 162 orphans who are taught in this school, each year. That is about $55 per student.
