March 2010 Calendar of Events All Month Long Local Featured Artist: Jeannie R. Johnson Artist Statement: In 1983, Jeannie took an oil painting class along with her mother. She struggled with it but kept trying anyway. She decided to try a different class and discovered a passion. This passion for oil painting grew from a lifelong interest in art. A couple of years later someone asked her to teach her daughter how to paint with oils. After a few months of teaching one person, she put an ad in the paper and started teaching classes. She began with ten students. This grew to over forty-five regular students in nine different classes. She now keeps her classes to six per week. She doesn’t teach weekly classes in the summer but conducts weeklong art day camps for kids. Jeannie is primarily self-taught although she has studied under many different teachers over the years and takes classes whenever there is opportunity. She enjoys working in many different mediums. Lately she has been pursuing pastels and now that is her “new favorite medium.” She paints each week with ColorWorks, a group of fellow artists. They continue to inspire her to try new things and stretch herself creatively. Many people all across the United States enjoy her work through private and corporate collections. Her work has been shown in several galleries. She was the featured artist for the Clymer Museum of Art in Ellensburg, Washington. Edena’s Gallery of Art in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, currently features Jeannie’s work. Jeannie works from her private studio and gallery. She enjoys other artists’ works and gets much inspiration from them. One of her favorite artists is Andrew Wyeth. Most of her original paintings are available as reproductions and cards. Jeannie lives with her husband in Ellensburg, Washington. He is the pastor of Chestnut Street Baptist Church. They have three children—all married—and ten grandchildren.
